The Atkins Diet
If you lived in the early 21st century, than there is no way you could have missed the Atkins Diet craze that overwhelmed the United States for a series of years. The Atkins Diet, which is officially titled the Atkins Nutritional Approach, was created by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1960s, originally based on a diet he read about in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Atkins first tested this diet plan on himself, when he used the Atkins Diet approach to lose the weight he had gained following med school and graduate medical training. In the late 60s and early 70s, the Atkins Diet was responsible for the weight loss of over ten thousand individuals.
The initial success of the Atkins Diet led to the publication of a series of diet books, starting with the book Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution in 1973. There was a resurgence of the Atkins’ Diet in the late 90s-early 2000s when the Atkins Diet and the “low-carb craze” because extremely popular yet again. While the diet seemed to work great, there was much speculation from many health related industries, stating that there was no way the Atkins’ Diet could be as healthy as everyone had claimed.
Over the years, there has been a decrease in the popularity of the Atkins Diet as other low-carb, but much more balanced and manageable diets came into existence. If fact, the popularity of the Atkins Diet has faded so much, that in July of 2005, the Atkins diet company filed for cheaper 11 bankruptcy, which happened to be two years after the death of Dr. Atkins. In January 2006, the Atkins Diet company resurfaced and has now focused their attention on selling their licensed branding for food products and other diet related merchandise.
